Spelling
This year, your child's spelling program may be different from what you've come to expect as "spelling." Instead of a weekly list of words to memorize, the third grade program will be emphasizing the learning of important words, not just for a "test", but learning how to spell these words throughout their entire lifetime, or "real world" spelling! This type of spelling takes a while to "grow". We will be working on instruction in phonics, word origins, spelling rules, usage, etc, learning to spell in everyday writing, and learning to spell words through word study of certain words. There is a list of words that are required to be spelled correctly for each quarter. They are called the "No Excuse Words". These words plus 5 new words each week will be written in the student planner on Monday. (The spelling binder will be left at school.) The "No Excuse Words" will need to be spelled correctly in every subject and in every piece of writing. Your child will be able to use their spelling binder and student planner any time to look up the correct spelling of these words, just as you would do if you did not know how to spell a word in real life. This list of "No Excuse Words" will increase with each quarter. A "Dear Parent" worksheet be sent home on Wednesday; it is to used to review a skill with your child. It will not be for a grade, but if you and your child work on it together I will give your child an "orange card" for the NW PBIS weekly drawing. Grades: I will be taking a weekly "Fix It" grade from an editing worksheet (usually given on Tuesday) and a weekly "Cloze Review" grade which is a listening plus spelling word test done in class on Thursday.
Let's make your child's spelling growth a team effort - you, me and your child all working together to help make your child a speller!
