Math
Math is a very important part of our day. This year we will be using a new program called My Math. My Math was written specifically for the Common Core State Standards that the state of Illinois has adopted as standards of teaching. The Common Core Standards are a set of universal standards for mathematics to be used by all the states. They seek to develop both the students' mathematical understanding and their procedural skills so that they may be fully prepared for the future in a global economy.
The Common Core Math Standards are divided into five domains: Number and Operations in Base Ten, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations - Fractions, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
One of the really cool things about this new program is that fact that it is online. Parents and students will be able to access lessons, practice pages, plus tutorials to help when needed. Everything parents needs to help their students succeed will all be at their fingertips! It contains hundreds of lessons, activities, manipulatives, games, animations, and videos! This program promises to keep students actively engaged as well as personalizing the learning!
Students practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts with a method called Rocket Ship Math. Rocket Ship will be practiced at home each day. A Rocket Ship practice drill will be sent home to practice daily. A Rocket Ship quiz for a grade will be given each Friday.
Problem Solving skills are taught daily; students will need to show their strategy, work, and labeling. Sometimes students are asked to show their strategies using How? (pictures, modeling, equations) and Why? (writing responses to go with the How)
